Scouting the Surround

Characters:

  • Serena (Sorcerer)
  • Ilai (Druid)
  • Fae’ael (Ranger)
  • Belrith (Cleric)

As we prepare to begin exploring, Serena emerges into portal town. She has an interesting conversation with Sophia, who she appears to know – although there are strange time differences between them. She comes over to Fae’ael, Belrith and Ilai who are preparing to head out, seeing Fae’ael finish braiding Ilai’s hair – a crown braid wrapping around their antlers and Belrith’s goatee. They introduce themselves and head down to the south.

Managing to get to the south – western tower without trouble, Ilai and Belrith find the tracks of a large feline – fairly big with non-retractable claws. The tracks are a couple of days old, but we don’t see any signs of it leaving the area. Fae’ael mentions probably flying creatures, but the shelter seems safe. Serena with a create bonfire and excellent cooking skills prepares a meal for the party and they enjoy the sunset.

As Ilai is taking a moment to watch the sunset over the ocean – surprised by it’s blue-green color, Fae’ael begins to sketch them, silhouetted by the setting sun. With a nat 20, it is a beautiful portrait. She presents it to Ilai with a blush, surprised at her own ability. Buoyed by the compliments she offers to sketch portraits of Belrith and Serena, who suggest that it’d be nice to have a sketch of the whole party. The party bonds and has a safe rest through the night.

The next morning, to complete the ritual – the party has Serena lead us into new terrain…who promptly rolls a nat 1 leading us out onto a long peninsula, discovering an ocean hex! Yay? Satisfied that the ritual of getting lost is now complete,. we backtrack and traverse the plains and forest without incident.

However we find the corspe of a deer that was ambushed by some kind of large creature, with non-retractable claws. Fae’ael and Serena watch the sky for the continuing adventure.

Exiting the forest, we find some standing stones on a peninsula—remnants of old civilization by the ocean. Belrith and Serena pose for Fae’ael to sketch them, but before she can start drawing, a huge manticore swoops down and attacks Ilai! We manage to take down the manticore pretty handily, convincing the creature we are not food, with Serena landing the killing blow, and cooking some delicious manticore steaks (minus the poison spikes.) and make camp for the night. Fae’ael does a beautiful portrait of Belrith and Serena, and looks after their copies till they are back safe.

In the middle of the night we’re attacked by two ogres (Jimbo and Frank), who again think we are food. Fae’ael has a scary moment of almost being thrown into the fire via people-bowling but we take them out and finish our short rest. In the morning, we realize that the ogres lived in a cave on the peninsula we were camped on, and find 174 gp of treasure in their hoard.

Buoyed by our recent find of treasure we journey through another couple hexes along the coast and find a few undead corpses pecked at by birds., finding 14 gp of treasure. Heading one more hex north-west, we find a small fortification by a riverbank with some “suspiciously not-alive things.” After a short discussion with Ilai, Fae’ael and a local chipmunk to get a lay of the land – we decide to scope it out. Ilai turns into a serval to scout around and Fae’ael rides along in the back of their head with beast sense.

Once Ilai has scoped out the place, we play some weird magical telephone communication with Ilai sketching out a plan, Fae’ael then communicating that plan, and then Serena casts message to send a response back to Ilai. Belrith mentions sending, but we don’t want to waste a spell slot. With the plan in place Ilai starts yowling and races out of the fort to draw them out, so Belrith can channel his divinity and destory the undead.

With divinity channeled, most of the undead die easily.

We take out the rest with combos from Fae’ael corpseslayer axe, Ilai’s ice spikes and a well-timed lighting breath from Serena’s companion Cedric. The fort now cleared we find 3 longswords and some gold, and manage to take a long rest for the evening. With long rest in hand we are able to sail through the the plains and forest with Belrith using all his spell slots to cast enhance ability on Ilai and Fae’ael (for advantage on all the Survival checks). In a new forest hex on the way back, we find a cave full of bones and dead things and big feline pawprints—the manticore’s lair – looting 364 gold and a +1 shortbow.

With friendships made and victory over undead achieved we head home, bumping into a new land for farming and a group of masons who recently appeared near town! We celebrate back in town, and the Fey Squad is victorious once again.
